Oliver grew up at the edge of the Steel City
As an actor, his work includes award-winning indie films, regional, fringe and West End theatre, television and commercial roles. He trained at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London, one of the UK’s leading drama schools.
He most recently starred in independent films Latent, a psychological thriller, and People at Night, an experimental drama, which combined were selected for over thirty film festivals across the world, picking up various awards and nominations.
In 2015 he formed a theatre company, Paperback Pictures, and launched and produced a monthly new writing night in a West End theatre. With a mission of inclusivity, this initiative aimed to provide a platform for emerging actors, writers and directors - no matter their background. This was positively received by critics throughout its two-year run, and helped a number of writers, directors and actors advance their careers in the arts.
Alongside his work as an actor, Oliver is an ambassador of leading UK educational charity Teach First, and completed their Leadership Development Programme in 2016. After overseeing English at senior leadership level in secondary schools across the country, he now works as a school-improvement consultant, and is passionate about using his creative skills to help empower young people and boost social mobility.
As a presenter, Oliver has combined his love for education and the creative arts, having produced and narrated free audiobooks for school-children and producing and hosting education podcasts for teachers; both of these have have attracted listeners from around the world. As a presenter, he has compered educational conferences and interviewed people of note, including most recently His Majesty’s Chief Inspector, Sir Martyn Oliver, in front of a live audience.
